Needles 4mm and 3.25 mm
Stitch markers

Gauge 22.5 = 10cm with 4mm needles
Use 4.5mm and 3.75mm for a looser garment

Back and Front : Make two pieces exactly alike.
Using smaller needles cast on 120 (130) sts

1st row: (wrong side) Knit
2nd row: K1, make 1(by knitting into back of next stitch) K57 (62)
K2 tog.sl 1, K1, PSSO (four centre sts) K57 (62) make 1, K1
Add  a stitch marker either side of four centre stitches
Repeat last two rows 5 (7) times, then first row once = 13 (17) rows in all

Change to larger needles
Next row:  K1, M1, K57 (62) K2 tog. Sl1, K1, PSSO, (four centre sts) K57, (62) M1, K1
Next row: PURL
Repeat last two rows 10 (12) times = 22 (26) rows in all

Beg. Shaping
1st row: K to four centre sts. K2tog. Sl1, K1, PSSO, K to end
2nd row: PURL
Repeat last two rows until 60 (62) sts remain
Next row: PURL

Eyelet row
Change to smaller needles K3 (2) * YFWD, (yarn forward) K2 tog. K1, repeat from * to end
Next row: Knit
Next row: Knit to four centre sts.  K2tog. Sl1, K1, PSSO, K to end
Repeat last two rows 4 (5) times = 50 stitches
Cast off LOOSELY with larger size needle

Press lightly. Join seams from front with flat running stitch seam, one stitch from edge.
Cord: Make I-Cord approx 50 inches (127 cm) knitted on 3 stitches with two double pointed needles (or make a braid) and thread through loops as shown.

This poncho was knitted with Bendigo Woollen Mills Classic 8 ply yarn in Classic Musk This is a machine washable 100% wool yarn spun with a twist that makes it hard wearing for children’s clothing as it does not pile like some softer yarns. Finished garment was hand washed and pressed.
